OVERVIEW:

The Group Underwriter will support the sales force through timely and accurate risk assessment and rating of both prospective and in-force group business.  The successful candidate will train and develop skills in a hands-on environment, which will enable the individual to manage ongoing underwriting tasks related to an assigned block of in-force group business.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Completion of renewals and quotations for health, dental, life and disability benefits.
  • Assessment of risk and determination of appropriate rates required for revisions to existing benefit plans to ensure the requested coverage fits the risk exposure using established methodology.
  • Review new business enrollments for health, dental, life, and income replacement benefits to ensure they align with the original quotation.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation to ensure all key decisions and actions are well documented.
  • Determine acceptability of insurance risks and appropriate premium rates for renewal and prospective groups in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority limits.
  • Interim and other financial and benefit reporting for benefit plans.
  • Support other group underwriters with large renewals, revisions, and quotations as required.
  • Participate in various projects in the organization.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:

  • While direct working experience in group underwriting is highly preferred, separate streams are available based on the level and nature of experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, business, economics (or a related degree) and/or at least three years of related experience.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and be adaptable and flexible to support the sales function.
  • Strong decision making, problem solving and analytical ability, with high attention to detail.
  • Highly committed to accuracy and timeliness with strong time management skills and follow through to meet multiple deadlines within tight time frames, working both autonomously and as a member of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to work from home and use video conferencing tools to collaborate.
  • Problem-solving to learn, on what can be a steep learning curve.
  • Strong computer and numerical skills.
  • Good understanding of group benefits and a general knowledge of Alberta Blue Cross® products is desirable.
  • CEBS, GBA and other underwriting related courses are preferred but not a requirement.
