OVERVIEW:
Medical underwriting is the practice of assessing an individual’s medical information to measure their risk for an insurance application. This position is suitable for individuals with practical medical knowledge or experience in healthcare and are looking to apply their skills to a career in the insurance industry. Candidates report directly to the Manager of Medical Underwriting as part of a cohesive team of health insurance risk selectors and support staff.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Review applications for health, life, and disability benefits for individual and group insurance to evaluate morbidity and mortality risk
- Communicate with applicants, health professionals, and businesses to gather information and explain decisions and policies
- Interpret, summarize, and record relevant medical information
- Make appropriate and justified decisions in line with underwriting guidelines and business goals
- Collaborate within the team and other departments to achieve strategic and operational goals
- Maintain and develop knowledge and skills through training, courses, and seminars
WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:
- Candidates with medical underwriting or life/health insurance experience are strongly preferred. 3+ years of experience required
- Working knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and pharmacology. Ideal candidates have work experience or an education in the medical field. Common backgrounds include nursing, pharmacy, lab technicians, imaging technicians, etc.
- Able to synthesize subjective and objective information from multiple sources to make well-informed decisions
- Exhibit fair judgement by balancing underwriting standards with good business decisions
- Dependable, accountable, courteous, and a good collaborator
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Able to provide excellent customer service to internal and external clients
- Able to work autonomously and as part of a team to fulfill prescribed deadlines
- Strong computer literacy, experience with Microsoft Office applications, and willingness to learn proprietary company software
- FALU/FLMI certifications are an asset but not required at time of hire. Candidates will be expected to obtain these designations as part of their professional development
