OVERVIEW:

The Director of General Accounting will be a dynamic leader that thrives in a fast paced and agile environment. The Director of General Accounting oversees a team that delivers the organization’s general accounting and financial reporting, ensuring accurate and reliable financial information is available for the organization. The Director of General Accounting’s customer centric and team-oriented approach will position Accounting and Finance as business partners supporting operations. Collaboration, with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, is paramount. They should have comprehensive knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and a solid financial controls background to complement their strong leadership, financial process, and organizational skills developed over a minimum of 10 years experience post-designation, including previous management experience. The future of Finance requires that the Director of General Accounting have a high level of understanding and comfort with transformation of processes and technology. The successful candidate will have a CPA designation

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures, including evaluating and building effective financial controls and processes.
  • Oversee the planning, organizing and execution of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process.
  • Be the primary liaison with internal audit, external audit, and actuaries.
  • Ensure successful completion of the company’s tax filings. 
    Oversee and collaborate on the preparation of financial statements, including cash flow statements and cash projections.
  • Oversight of Treasury and Accounts Payable functions.
  • Responsible for planning, budgeting, and authorizing expenditures for the department.
  • Collaborate with Financial Planning and Analysis.
  • Lead and participate on cross functional project teams to deliver business objectives while defining and delivering Finance and Accounting requirements for data, controls, financial insights, and reporting.
  • Design, establish and maintain an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the departments short- and long-range goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the hiring, training and retaining competent accounting team members, including coaching, mentoring and performance reviews.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:

  • 10+ years of accounting and finance experience in a leadership role
  • Bachelors or master’s degree in business, finance or similar.
  • CPA required.
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical thinking skills.
  • Experience with a variety of accounting and financial reporting systems, including awareness or knowledge of advanced query languages like SQL, Python or R.
  • Expert or advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of reporting, performance management and business intelligence tools.
  • Excellent knowledge of IFRS with experience interpreting and applying standards while managing and communicating the impacts to operations.
  • Effective communication exhibited across all levels of the organization.
  • Superior problem-solving skills employed through a strategic lens.
  • Dedication to helping peers and team members succeed.
  • A natural collaborator and relationship builder that works well and builds relationships across functions.
  • Ability to develop and implement innovative and creative solutions to business problems while encouraging others to think progressively.
  • Understanding of finance data management, architecture, integrations, and automations.
  • Strong background in external reporting.
  • Experience working in public accounting.
  • Prior experience working on or leading large transformation projects such as system implementations, expansions.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian tax.
